Gary Geoffrey Thomas, of Frank Bodicote, Swadlincott, South Derbyshire, who was 37 at the time of his sex offence, used chatrooms to groom and have sex four times with an 14-year-old girl from Newtown in Wales.
Judge Huw Daniel jailed Thomas, at sentenced his to an order, banning the chatroom bob from using the Internet or mobile phone for the following five years. The order was suggested by prosecuting barrister Steven Everett, who said that the idea had come from child protection officers working for Dyfed Powys police.
Judge Daniel, sitting at Mold Crown Court, said about the use of the order for chatroom bobs. “It is high time that was examined. The judiciary cannot do anything about it. It is a matter for Parliament,’ he said. £The maximum sentence I could pass would be two years. This is the idiocy of it. There is very little scope to operate a sentencing exercise that takes into account his undoubted paedophilia. It should be something in the order of 10 years in my judgment.”
Continuing the judge said. “The maximum sentence for these offences are two years and I have to take into account your pleas of guilty.” “I regard these offences as being aggravated by the fact that you are a predatory paedophile.” “The sooner that you come to terms with that description the better it will be for everyone, especially young girls.”
The girl in question was one of 15 girls he had contact with aged between 13 and 16, and Thomas would visit then when their parents were way. One girl did not realise he was over 20 until it was too late, and was gulled by Thomas into thinking he loved her, especially when he turned up with flowers.
TheA police investigation found Thomas made 1,700 calls to the Newtown girl, even after she told him to stop.
